So apologies for the delay in reviews but it was Christmas and I had gifts to buy and wrap! And in case you’re wondering, I got the best gift of all, COMICS! So now that Christmas is done and the New Year fast approaching, let’s see what 2015 has to offer. First off is this offering from Dark Horse.
So the first thing I’ll say about this book is that it’s really easy to read. Very little dialogue through the first half and even in the back half it’s still not a lot. Kind of perfect though. You get all you need for a set up issue through the art and by the time you realize its light on dialogue, that’s about when you start to wonder where the story is going. A house wife has a part time job as a hitman. Sure it’s been done before, but it’s still not boring to me. The first half is the protagonist, Josie, completing one of her assignments. Disguised as an Avon Representative, she gets the job done before returning home to cook the family dinner. We are than introduced to her family, husband, kids and suspicious mother-in-law. Mid-dinner time she receives a phone call that introduces us to here unpleasant “Boss”, Peck. From here on its setup for the next issue.
The art is really good too. A great mash up of suburban niceties along with contract killing. Jones has a great style and very well suited to the plot. The other highlight that has to be mentioned is Laura Allred’s art. I hardly ever mention the colorists for a book but when someone as talented as Allred comes to a book, it’s noticeable. I won’t mention her too much because if you read comics, chances are you know her work and how fantastic it is.
So while it’s not breaking new ground with the plot so far, this is still a cool story to start 2015 with. I’m intrigued enough to pick up issue two and I hope the art maintains its consistency. I can see myself reading this series in between heavier plot driven books and enjoying it. Definitely worth a shot if you are looking to start 2015 off with something new.
